LPG tanks and bottles: what to know before work starts
The tank is part of your heating system, even if the supplier owns it. Before any building or landscaping work near it, find out whose tank it is and what the supplier requires.
LPG suppliers publish safety guidance for tank owners. Flogas, for example, advises keeping a 3 metre radius around the tank clear of weeds, rubbish and combustible materials. It also says not to put a building or structure within 3 metres, such as a shed, garage or conservatory, and not to have any source of ignition within 3 metres.

The same guidance is clear that you should not interfere with or modify any part of the installation, and that you should contact the supplier before building work that could affect it. Your own supplier's rules take priority over any general guide, so check them before you plan changes.

Gas safety with LPG: what to do if you smell gas
LPG appliances need the same care as any other gas appliance. A smell of gas, a boiler that keeps shutting down or a flame that will not stay lit all deserve attention straight away.
If you smell gas near your tank or appliances: open doors and windows, put out any naked flames, leave the property if you can and call your LPG supplier's emergency number, which should be on your tank or in your paperwork. If there is immediate danger, call 999. Check the exact steps with your supplier so you know them before you need them.
Carbon monoxide has no smell, so it is worth fitting an alarm that meets British Standard BS EN 50291 alongside regular servicing.
