Rust and debris settle in the bottom of the radiator and stop hot water flowing through it. Bleeding will not fix it. The usual cure is a system clean, often a power flush, carried out by a heating engineer.
Radiators cold at the bottom are one of the most common heating complaints we hear in Derby once the weather turns. The heating comes on, the top of the radiator feels hot, and the bottom half stays cool. The room never quite gets warm.
The good news is that it is usually fixable, and the cause is easy to spot once you know what to look for. This guide explains why it happens, what you can safely check yourself and when it is time to call an engineer.
Why are my radiators cold at the bottom?
A central heating system is a loop of water. Over time, the inside of steel radiators and pipes slowly corrodes. That corrosion creates a dark, heavy sludge, mostly iron oxide, which is sometimes called magnetite.
Because sludge is heavier than water, it sinks. It collects along the bottom of each radiator, where it blocks the channels hot water needs to flow through. The top still heats up because hot water can pass over the sludge, but the bottom stays cold.
In older Derby homes, particularly those with original pipework or a heating system that has never been cleaned, this is very common. It tends to build up gradually, so many people only notice it when the first cold snap arrives.
Other causes worth knowing about
Sludge is the usual reason, but it is not the only one. These can also leave part of a radiator cold:
- Poor balancing. If the system is not balanced, radiators furthest from the boiler may not get enough flow.
- Sticking valves. A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) with a stuck pin can restrict flow.
- A struggling pump. A weak circulation pump can fail to push water round the whole system.
- Debris in pipework. Sludge does not only sit in radiators. It can narrow pipes and clog the boiler's heat exchanger too.
Cold at the bottom vs cold at the top: what is the difference?
Where the cold patch sits tells you a lot. This quick table is the first thing we would ask a Derby customer about over the phone.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cold at the bottom, warm at the top | Sludge settled in the radiator | System clean or power flush |
| Cold at the top, warm at the bottom | Air trapped in the radiator | Bleed the radiator, then check boiler pressure |
| Cold in the middle | Sludge build-up across the radiator | Radiator flush or full system clean |
| Whole radiator cold | Closed or stuck valve, or a balancing issue | Check valves, then balance the system |
| Radiators upstairs cold, downstairs fine | Pump, balancing or low pressure | Engineer diagnosis |
A radiator that is cold at the top is good news, because bleeding usually fixes it in a few minutes. Cold at the bottom is the one that points to sludge.
Checks you can safely do at home
Before you book anyone in Derby, there are a few simple checks you can do yourself. None of these involve opening the boiler, which should only ever be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Turn the heating on and let it run. Give it 15 to 20 minutes, then carefully feel each radiator from top to bottom. They can get hot, so use the back of your hand.
- Note which radiators are affected. One radiator points to a local problem. Several radiators suggest the whole system needs attention.
- Check the valves. Make sure the TRV is turned up and the valve on the other end has not been closed.
- Bleed any radiator that is cold at the top. If water from the bleed valve looks dark or black, that is a sign of sludge in the system.
- Check your boiler pressure. After bleeding, the gauge on most combi boilers should sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. If it has dropped, follow your boiler manual to top it up.
Safety note: Do not remove radiators, open the boiler casing or add chemicals to a sealed system unless you know exactly what you are doing. If you smell gas, turn off the supply, open the windows and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Once sludge is confirmed, there are a few ways to deal with it. The right one depends on how bad the build-up is and how old the system is.
Removing and flushing a single radiator
If only one radiator is affected, an engineer can take it off the wall and flush it through. This works for an isolated problem, but it does not clean the rest of the system. If sludge is in one radiator, it is often elsewhere too.
A full power flush
A power flush connects a pump to your heating system and pushes water and cleaning chemicals through it at speed. It lifts sludge and debris out of radiators, pipes and the boiler, then flushes it all away with clean water.
For a Derby home where several radiators are cold at the bottom, this is usually the most effective fix. It cleans the whole loop in one visit rather than chasing the problem one radiator at a time.
Protecting the system afterwards
After a clean, it makes sense to stop the problem coming back. An engineer may recommend adding inhibitor, which slows corrosion inside the system, and fitting a magnetic filter, which catches debris before it reaches the boiler. Your engineer can explain which of these suits your system.
Why sludge matters for your boiler, not just your radiators
Cold radiators are the symptom you can feel. The bigger concern is what sludge does to the boiler. Dirty water passing through a modern boiler can clog its heat exchanger and pump, which can lead to noise, poor performance and breakdowns.
That is why every boiler installation we carry out in Derby includes a central heating power flush. Fitting a new boiler to a dirty system is like putting a new engine in a car with dirty oil. A clean system gives the new boiler the best start.
If your boiler is already 10 to 15 years old or more and the system is full of sludge, it may be worth weighing up repair against replacement. Our guide to the signs you need a new boiler, not another repair goes through how to decide.
Can I prevent radiators going cold at the bottom?
You cannot stop corrosion completely, but you can slow it down a lot. These habits help Derby homeowners keep their systems cleaner for longer:
- Book an annual boiler service. A yearly boiler service picks up early signs of sludge and pressure problems before they become breakdowns.
- Keep inhibitor levels topped up. Ask your engineer to check it at your service.
- Do not ignore dark water. If bleeding a radiator brings out black water, get the system looked at.
- Fit a magnetic filter. It captures debris continuously, so less of it reaches the boiler.
- Clean the system when you change the boiler. This is why a power flush is part of every installation we do.

Radiators cold at the bottom: FAQs
Why is my radiator cold at the bottom but hot at the top?
It is usually sludge. Corrosion inside the heating system creates heavy debris that sinks to the bottom of the radiator and blocks the flow of hot water. The top still heats because water can pass over the sludge.
Will bleeding a radiator fix it if it is cold at the bottom?
No. Bleeding releases trapped air, which causes radiators to be cold at the top. A radiator that is cold at the bottom usually needs the sludge cleaned out, either by flushing the radiator or with a power flush of the whole system.
What is a power flush?
A power flush is a deep clean of your central heating system. An engineer connects a pump that pushes water and cleaning chemicals through the radiators, pipes and boiler to remove sludge, then flushes the system with clean water.
How do I know if my central heating has sludge?
Common signs include radiators cold at the bottom, dark or black water when you bleed a radiator, radiators that take a long time to warm up, and a noisy boiler.
Can sludge damage my boiler?
Yes. Sludge can clog a boiler's heat exchanger and pump, which can reduce efficiency and lead to breakdowns. This is why we include a power flush with every new boiler installation.
Do you fix cold radiators in Derby?
Yes. Etta Plumbing & Heating Services is a Gas Safe registered (166252) heating engineer based in Derby, trading since 1997. We diagnose and fix cold radiators, carry out power flushes and service boilers across Derby and Derbyshire.
Warm radiators start with a clean system
Radiators cold at the bottom are your heating system telling you it needs a clean. Left alone, the sludge behind it can affect your boiler as well as your comfort.
A quick check at home will tell you whether it is air or sludge. If it is sludge, a local Derby engineer can clean the system and get every radiator heating properly again before the coldest months arrive.
