When your oil boiler stops working
A dead boiler in January is stressful, but a few quick checks can save a call-out or at least help the engineer. Look at the oil gauge to make sure the tank has fuel. Check the boiler has power, and check the thermostat and timer settings have not been knocked.
If the boiler has locked out, you may be able to reset it once by following the manufacturer's instructions. If it locks out again, do not keep pressing the button. Repeated lockouts point to a fault that needs an engineer.

Any fuel-burning appliance can produce carbon monoxide if it is faulty or poorly maintained. The rules for storing oil at home also set out when a bund, which is a secondary container that catches leaks, is needed. That includes tanks within 10 metres of inland or coastal waters, within 50 metres of a drinking water source, or holding more than 2,500 litres.
Businesses face stricter rules. GOV.UK says the oil storage regulations for businesses apply to containers that can hold 201 litres or more, and that you are responsible for any pollution caused by problems with your tank.
