Why commercial plumbing is not just domestic work on a bigger scale
A homeowner with a failed boiler has one household to look after. A Derby office, school or care home has many people relying on the same system, often at the same time. That changes the cost of a breakdown and the urgency of fixing it.

Safety, water hygiene and compliance for Derby premises
Looking after a commercial building means keeping people safe as well as warm. Three areas come up again and again: gas, water hygiene and workplace temperature.
Gas safety
Gas appliances, flues and pipework in a business need to be kept in a safe condition, and only a Gas Safe registered engineer can legally work on them. A regular gas safety inspection is how most businesses show that the job has been done. Legionella and hot water
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is clear that employers, and anyone in control of premises including landlords, are responsible for reducing the risk of legionella. That means identifying and assessing sources of risk, managing and controlling them, and keeping the right records. The HSE sets out what you must do on its website.
The HSE's guidance on hot and cold water systems also gives practical temperature targets. Cold water should be kept below 20°C where possible. Hot water should be stored at 60°C or higher and reach 50°C within a minute at the outlets, or 55°C in healthcare premises. Details are in its guidance on hot and cold water systems.
The risk assessment itself is the responsibility of the person in charge of the building. Where it points to plumbing that needs attention, such as pipework that leaves water standing unused, our engineers can talk through the options and put the plumbing right.
Care homes and nursing homes: HSE guidance points to Type 3 thermostatic mixing valves to keep bathing water at or below 44°C for vulnerable people. Workplace temperature
Employers must provide a reasonable indoor temperature. The HSE's Approved Code of Practice suggests a minimum of 16°C for general work, or 13°C where much of the work involves rigorous physical effort.
